The budget crisis in WFP is bad. But I didn't want to believe it wholeheartedly.
A part of me is still optimistic that I will be ok, because if not, I won't have a job next year. Forget visiting friends. None of that for me!
I had spoken to Elena on Tuesday about the situation and asked her if I should be concerned. She reassured me and told me it'll be ok. By October they will be pushing for my renewal of contract. I can't wait, because they'll do it for one year and hopefully my permesson won't take so long to come out and I can visit Leo frequently if he still decides to be in Brussels next year. By Wednesday though, things were a bit different. Jill came up to me and told me that she had a long talk with Anita and I should do the same. Last Wednesday I wasn't able to do anything, workwise. I had to pay the phone bill, sent the postcards, then spoke with Anita who in short told me this, you're budget is created and approved (as G2) for the next bienium. So there is the post. But whether it will be you who will be sitting on it, is unclear.
That obviously threw me off. I had been meaning to talk to Rob since last week (ever since the ED's email came out) but never got around to it. Finally, after I brought in somethings for Rob to sign, I asked if he had a minute so we could talk about me. So I told him my concerns and asked him, so whats the deal.
He was very honest with me and contrary to the impression other people have, Rob does seem trustworthy. He did fight for me in the end to be here, so I'm sure if he tells me he's doing everything he can for my best interest, I believe him. He explained why he didn't want to promote me (my upgrade) which I was expecting this year. He reasoned if I and the position became G3, I was more likely to be at risk of not having a job. Versus, the fact that there aren't much compitition for G2's. So in order to keep me, he let my position remain unchanged.
Jill is extremely pessimistic and it really pulls me in. Nevertheless, I can't help but feel bad for her anyway. She can't eat. She can't sleep and she can't function as well. She did tell me that if ever we left the unit together (because we were the most likely candidates to lose our jobs at the end of the year) the unit will suffer (a bit-well, lets not be arrogant here or to self important).
So strange the office policits. I'll find out more when I return to work next wednesday.
More then!
